Dear Diary,
I have an appointment at the career center tomorrow, and it's going to go quite a bit like that scene from High Fidelity where John Cusak rattles off all the things he will not do with his life. "I don't want to sell anything I don't want to work for anyone who sells anything I don't want to have a boss I don't want to sit in a desk..." Except I am going to say "I don't want to work with any combination of food and people." And I will not work in Lake Oswego. Nothing against Lake Oswego of course, I just don't like going there. Food and people and lake oswego is swell for not but not for long. I have very different short, mid, and long term goals. I hope everything works out. my life, that is. We'll find out tomorrow.
For a while I have believed in the principle of spend less money so you can spend less time working. Because our time really is the most valuable thing we have. I don't really think that I have lived that principle until now, when I have no choice. I haven't been getting enough hours and I don't really have money to burn. Generally I like spending money when i want something- but it's a good feeling when you know that you're not living outside your means.
At work tonight I seated this woman who was by herself so I chatted with her a bit, and brought her a magazine to read during her meal. When she left she handed me the magazine back with a comment card that said what a good job the hostess and server did! It may not seem like a big deal but in corporation land comment cards are a big deal, and hostesses are NEVER mentioned. and she handed it straight to ME! It made my whole day. This is actually the third time I have retold this story tonight.
Love,
Diana

I agree. Not working is better than working, and working 40 hours a week, every week, seems almost unimaginable.
Also, that John Cusack scene was from Say Anything, set in Seattle (but filmed almost entirely in L.A.)
How did you get to be so wise? And I feel the same way about Bellevue. If I never have to go there again, I would consider that an accomplishment.
Mom
