Dear Diary,
can i just say, that even though they sell havianas at urban outfitters now there are still WAY cooler ones in Brazil that made the trip all worth it? They have revolutionized the flip flop, and we´re completely oblivious. let me think of some hilights of the trip so far: we got bumped from our original flight from Miami to Sao Paulo so then we flew the next day in business class. it was probably the best thing that ever happened to me. they fed us with linen and china and we got really amazing plane food, asparagus, shrimp, and the like. Our seats reclined almost all the way, and we got tvs that popped out of the armrest filled with movies for our viewing pleasure. All the flight attendants were really nice beautiful Brazillian women. I can see why people pay all that money for business class. because it´s amazing and I felt like a princess.
My brother is really good at Portuguese, it´s really helpful. Yesterday this woman yelled at me on the Ipanema beach for throwing a soaking coconut back into the water, and my brother could totally translate. I feel bad that I can´t speak Portuguese but I can´t really help it. It´s unreasonable to expect me to get provicient this quickly. Rio is the most unbelieably beautiful city I´ve ever seen. There are all these mountains scatttered through it, the tallest one has a Jesus on top of it with his arms outspread. It´s lit up at night. A very imposing figure, that Jesus.
Tomorrow, Pantanal and hopefully monkeys.
Love,
Diana

What was wrong with throwing the coconut back into the water, and how were you to know?

Oh my god girl, I am so jealous. Even though I am in my own paradise right now, Brazil sounds amazing. I really want to go some day. I hope you're having an amazing time. I miss you!

Send a postcard to your old uncle Tom - perhaps on the back of a wet coconut? Or better yet, eat one in my memory! :)
